A system and method are provided for protecting optical signals within a wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) environment. The system (400) and method utilize a single ~protection~ wavelength translator device (400d) to protect up to N wavelengths (.lambda.1-.lambda.N). The system (400) and method utilize N+1 wavelength translator devices (440a-440c) in order to provide protected transport for N wavelengths.
