The method and apparatus for providing a peer-to-peer and leaf node network for online game s, which enables users within their own local world to enjoy the game experience with other online users by sharing local copies of the world and characters. The system for providing the peer-to-peer and leaf node network and online games is made up of a client, leaf node and leaf server. The leaf server is comprised of an authentication system, content update system and relay synchronization system and plays a key role in initiating the peer-to-peer communication and es-tablishing the leaf node network. The authentication system provides an entry-point into the gaming network and initiates communication with clients and nodes within the network. The content update system provides access to user created content and commercial created content. The relay synchronization system shares content across leaf servers. Leaf nodes are clients that share in distribution of content and information.
