A method and apparatus for providing interactive telecomputing systems comprising a central computer system, one or more remote user computer systems and telecommunication links between the central and remote systems through conventional telephone lines or the like. Each remote user computer system includes a mass storage device such as a CDROM device storing static data, such as graphic, audio and multimedia components of the telecomputing system. Active data, such as bank account balances, news information, etc., is retrieved from the central computer system and merged with appropriate static data to present a full featured, interactive system to the user. The system creates the perception of a direct, high bandwidth connection to the central computer system.
