METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR PYROLYZING OF OIL SHALE ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE When oil shale of the type found in the Green River formation of the Western United States is pyrolyzed at around 900°F the kerogen, or organic portion of the shale, decomposes to gas and oil leaving an inorganic residue re- ferred to as spent shale containing around 4 per cent carbon. When this carbon is combusted the burned residue is then re- ferred to as shale ash. Many problems are encountered when attempting to recover the heat produced by combusting the spent shale. The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for the efficient and economic recovery of the heat produced by spent shale combustion.
