Abstract of the Disclosure A method and apparatus for reading bar coded data for entry into a data collection system. The data is read by an optical wand and the data signals are processed by D.C. coupled, operational amplifiers to provide binary coded signals representative of the coded data. The light source is periodically energized and maintained energized only in response to the sensing of a reflective surface.
