An apparatus for determining the dose rate or dose of radiation from an in vivo source of low energy X-rays, comprising: a catheter for locating in a urethra or rectum and having at least one radiation detector; a spectrometer for receiving an output of the detector; and a data processor for receiving an output of the spectrometer. The apparatus is configured to determine from an area under or corresponding to one or more of the photopeaks of the low energy X-rays a dose rate or dose delivered by the source.
