An apparatus (10) is disclosed for generating data representative of a three- dimensional distribution of the light backscattering potential of a transparent or semi-transparent object (12, 102) such as a human eye. The apparatus (10) includes an interferometer (14, 104), both the reference beam and measurement beam of which are directed toward the object (12, 102) and reflected by respective reference and measurement sites thereof, such that axial motion of the object (12, 102) during measurement affects both beams equally. The measurement beam is raster scanned transversely across each measurement site for which data is obtained. Also, the frequency of one of the beams is shifted by a non-moving frequency shifter (FS), such that the reflected beams combine and are modulated by a heterodyne beat frequency, which is detected when the object path difference is matched with the interferometer path difference. Because the non-moving frequency shifter (FS) can effectively generate a beat frequency of about 40 MHz, relatively rapid transverse and longitudinal scanning are facilated.

L'invention concerne un appareil (10) permettant de produire des données représentant la répartition tridimensionnelle du potentiel de rétrodiffusion de lumière d'un objet transparent ou semi-transparent (12, 102), par exemple un oeil humain. Cet appareil (10) comprend un interféromètre (14, 104) émettant un faisceau de référence et un faisceau de mesure qui sont dirigés sur ledit objet (12, 102), ces faisceaux étant par ailleurs réfléchis respectivement par des sites de référence et de mesure sur cet objet, de sorte que tout déplacement axial de ce dernier (12, 102), en cours de mesure, affecte les deux faisceaux de la même façon. Le faisceau de mesure est soumis à un balayage tramé de manière transversale sur chaque site de mesure pour lequel des données sont produites. Par ailleurs, la fréquence de l'un desdits faisceaux est déplacée au moyen d'un dispositif de déplacement de fréquence non mobile (FS), de sorte que les faisceaux réfléchis se combinent et sont modulés par un battement hétérodyne, que l'on détecte lorsque la différence de trajet de l'objet correspond à celle dudit interféromètre. Le dispositif de déplacement de fréquence non mobile (FS) étant capable de produire efficacement un battement d'environ 40 MHz, il facilite un balayage transversal et longitudinal relativement rapide.
