A method for reducing abrasive contact of a sucker rod string against well tubing by placing wear pads at intervals along the sucker rod string. A sucker rod developed in accordance with the teachings of the method. The sucker rod has at least one wear pad, the cross-sectional dimension of which is less than the cross-sectional dimension of couplings which couple individual sucker rods in end to end relation.
