A method and apparatus for reducing noise in optical communication systems, wherein the frequency of light output from a signal laser is modulated or dithered to broaden the optical spectrum of the signal laser. The broadening allows error-free data transmission within signal bands, despite the presence of optical beat interference. Different dithering tones are emitted by each laser in the network. The dithering tone for each signal laser in an optical network is chosen so that distortion resulting from the dithering tone falls outside the signal bands.
L'invention est constituée par une méthode et un appareil servant à réduire le bruit dans les systèmes de communication optiques. Dans cette invention, la fréquence de la lumière émise par un laser de transmission de signaux est modulée pour élargir le spectre du signal du laser. Cet élargissement permet de transmettre les données sans erreur dans les bandes de fréquences des signaux, malgré la présence de brouillage dû aux battements. Chaque laser du réseau produit des tonalités de modulation différentes. Dans un réseau optique, la tonalité de modulation de chaque laser est choisie de façon que la distorsion résultant de la modulation se trouve à l'extérieur des bandes de fréquences des signaux.
