A method and apparatus for reducing crop losses during slab and ingot rolling concerns the formation of a slab ingot having a specially configured or shaped butt end and optionally a head end as well. A special shape is formed by machining, forging or preferably by casting. The special shape at the butt end is imparted during casting by a specially shaped bottom block or starter block. The special shape of the bottom block is imparted to the cast ingot butt end. The specially shaped butt end of a slab shaped ingot is generally rectangular in shape and has longitudinally outwardly extending, enlarged portions (24), which slope downwardly toward a depressed central valley region (26). The lateral sides of the enlarged end portions and the depressed valley region carry transversely extending, tapered or curved edges. A similar shape may be imparted to the head end of the ingot at the conclusion of a casting run through the use of a specially shaped hot top mold or by way of machining or forging the cast head end. During subsequent hot rolling in a reversing roughing mill, the specially shaped slab ingot minimizes the formation of overlap and tongue so as to improve material recovery by reducing end crop losses and to increase rolling mill efficiency by increasing metal throughput in the mill.
La présente invention concerne un procédé et un appareil permettant de réduire les chutes pendant le laminage en plaques. Cette invention concerne plus particulièrement la formation d'une plaque possédant une extrémité de queue agencée ou mise en forme spécialement, et d'une extrémité de tête. Une forme spéciale est constituée par usinage, par forgeage ou de préférence par coulage. Cette forme spéciale est constituée au niveau de l'extrémité de queue pendant le coulage par un bloc de fond spécialement mis en forme ou par un premier bloc. Cette forme spéciale du bloc de fond est donnée à l'extrémité de queue de la plaque coulée. Cette extrémité de queue d'une plaque spécialement mise en forme est généralement rectangulaire et présente des parties élargies qui s'étendent longitudinalement vers l'extérieur, et qui descendent selon une pente vers une région de vallée centrale déprimée. Les portions latérales des parties d'extrémité élargies et la région de vallée déprimée portent des bords incurvés ou effilés qui s'étendent transversalement. Une forme similaire peut être donnée à l'extrémité de tête de la plaque à la fin d'un coulage par utilisation d'un moule supérieur à chaud spécialement mis en forme, ou par usinage ou par forgeage de l'extrémité de tête coulée. Pendant le laminage à chaud suivant dans le laminoir dégrossisseur réversible, la plaque spécialement mise en forme minimise la formation de chevauchements et de langues de façon à améliorer la récupération de matière par la réduction des chutes d'extrémité, et à augmenter l'efficacité du laminoir par l'augmentation de la production de métal dans ce laminoir.
