A method and apparatus for removing airborne contaminants in a forced air circulation system. The apparatus consists of a combination that includes an electronic filter and a register. The electronic filter includes a power grid capable of being activated by a low voltage power source and a switch for activating and deactivating power from the low voltage power source to the power grid. The air register includes a mounting portion and a cover portion. A first contact for the switch is mounted to the mounting portion and a second contact for the switch is mounted to the cover portion. Placing the cover portion on the mounting portion brings the second contact into engagement with the first contact to place the switch in an "on" position and removing the cover portion from the mounting portion separates the second contact from the first contact to place the switch in an "off" position.
