A method and apparatus for removing plaque, fatty deposits, and other occlusions from blood vessels using ultrasonic energy. The method and apparatus has particular application in removing plaque from the carotid artery in a non-thermal manner. The apparatus is designed to have as small a cross-sectional profile as possible, therefore allowing the apparatus to be used in a minimally-invasive manner. As a result, the apparatus can be used in both surgical and outpatient treatment with minimal post-operative complications and minimal damage to areas other than the area of treatment. An ultrasonic probe (6) may include aspiration channels (60) on its outer surface. An aspiration sheath (70) may surround the ultrasonic probe (6), such that the location of an aspiration port may be varied axially relative to an ultrasonic tip (7).

L'invention concerne un procédé et un appareil permettant d'éliminer la plaque, les dépôts gras et autres occlusions sur les vaisseaux sanguins, au moyen de l'énergie ultrasonore. Le procédé et l'appareil selon l'invention trouvent des applications particulières dans l'élimination de la plaque déposée sur l'artère carotide, de manière non thermique. Une sonde ultrasonore (6) peut comprendre des canaux d'aspiration (60) formés sur sa surface extérieure. Une gaine d'aspiration (70) peut entourer la sonde ultrasonore (6), de sorte que l'emplacement d'un orifice d'aspiration peut être modifié axialement par rapport à une pointe ultrasonore (7).
