A method and apparatus for removing a polymer coating from a pipe. A first step involves freezing the polymer coating on the pipe to temperatures colder than the glass transition temperature of the coating to make the coating brittle. The freezing is accomplished as rapidly as possible, so that the pipe does not get as cold as the coating. A second step involves immediately shattering the brittle coating to dislodge the brittle coating from the pipe, before the coating has an opportunity to warm and before the pipe gets thermal shock from exposure to cold.
