A process and apparatus for removing SO2 from low-volume gas streams containing high concentrations of SO2 includes a tank scrubber containing an aqueous SO2 absorbent and an impeller. The impeller includes a vertical rotating shaft having an upper and lower impeller. The lower impeller serves to agitate the SO2 absorbent. The upper impeller include a shroud thereby directing the absorbent and gas outwardly toward the wall of the scrubber. The gas is injected into the absorbent at a point below the shrouded impeller. The shroud prevents gas bypass and thereby promotes gas-liquid mixing and, consequently, markedly improves SO2 removal efficiency.

Procédé et appareil servant à éliminer, des flux de gaz de faible densité, le SO2 qui s'y trouve en fortes concentrations. L'appareil se compose d'une enceinte d'épuration contenant un agent aqueux qui absorbe le SO2 ainsi que d'un impulseur. L'impulseur comporte un arbre tournant vertical sur lequel est montée une aile agitatrice supérieure et une aile agitatrice inférieure. L'aile inférieure sert à agiter l'agent d'absorption. L'aile supérieure est recouverte d'une enveloppe de protection qui dirige l'agent d'absorption et le gaz vers l'extérieur, en direction des parois de l'enceinte d'épuration. Le gaz est injecté dans l'agent d'absorption en un point situé en-dessous de l'aile protégée. L'enveloppe de protection empêche le gaz de dériver, favorise le mélange de gaz et de liquide et, par conséquent, améliore considérablement le procédé d'élimination du SO2.
