ABSTRACT An apparatus and method for reproduction of a recorded video signal using a digital process to achieve a high fidelity image and to allow reversal of the tape drive direction without disturbance of the reproduced image involves switching among a plurality of field memories each of which stores image data for one video field picked up by a rotary head and from which image data can be retrieved for reproduction each time the scanning for one record area is completed. Reversal of the tape drive direction is detected and switching among the field memories for a given period is disabled to hold the reproduced video image unchanged on a video monitor.
