METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR RETORTING PACKAGES HAVING SEALED FLEXIBLE LIDS ABSTRACT An apparatus and method are described for generating a retort cycle pressure control in a reliable manner. A proximity sensor is used to detect motions of a flexible lid of a hermetically sealed package that contains food which releases vapor and gases when the package is retorted. The sensor is not in physical contact with the package an does not influence the lid motion it is intended to monitor. A signal from the sensor is used to produce a counter-pressure in the retort sufficient to keep the lid motion to a minimum throughout the retort cycle. A plurality of packages can be so used during a retort cycle to generate averaged values for a counter-pressure control. LPATCASE:145
