ABSTRACT In connecting a rigid riser to a subsea wellhead, a running tool/guideframe assembly is run along the guidewires and locked onto the guideposts of the well template. Currently, at least one pair of winch wires are connected to the running tool to permit retrieval once the riser is connected. The possibilities of entanglement of four guidewires and two (or more) winch wires and other related problems are increased in deeper water applications. The present invention proposes connecting the guidewires to the guideposts using a latching mechanism. The running tool would be connected to a slide collar on the guidewire by straps or the like. Once installation of the riser was completed, the latching mechanism would be disengaged from all four guide posts and retrieving the guidewires would cause each of the latch mechanisms to engage their respective slide collars and simultaneously retrieve the running tool. Alternatively, the guideposts could be equipped with a shoulder or ring that could engage in the positioning funnel of the running tool. The guideposts themselves could be disengaged from the template and the shoulders on the posts used to retrieve the running tool, again by reeling in the guidewires. CO-7899
