A method and apparatus for sealing between relatively articulable surfaces is provided by folding a thin flexible sheet material to form a multilayer flattened elongated member. A large gap can be sealed, and seal installation and service life is improved by clamping a stiffened thickened portion of the seal member to each surface. Resulting avoidance of stress concentrations, combined with increased flexibility attributable to its multilayer construction, contributes significantly to improved installation and service performance of the seal.
Méthode et appareil pour faire un joint étanche entre des surfaces relativement articulables par pliage d'une mince feuille souple de manière à former un élément multicouche aplati et allongé. On peut ainsi sceller un joint assez large, et on facilite l'installation du joint tout en améliorant sa durée de vie en fixant à chaque surface une partie raidie et plus épaisse de l'élément de joint. Il en résulte qu'on évite des concentrations de tension et qu'on obtient une souplesse accrue attribuable à la construction multicouche, ce qui contribue grandement à faciliter l'intallation du joint qui montre aussi une meilleure performance en service.
