ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method and apparatus are provided herein for seating a gasket in one end of a plastic pipe by using a shaped mandrel. The method includes the steps of heating that one end and softening the plastic sufficiently to make it pliable. Then a hard configured ring is positioned on a medial portion of the mandrel, thereby defining an outer ring periphery of a diameter that is larger than the diameter of the mandrel, and also defin- ing an annular, radially-inwardly-exposed, angular junction in the ring. Then the heated end of the pipe is applied over the mandrel and over the outer periphery of the ring to form a shaped bell with an annular, radially-outwardly-extending pocket therein. The heated pipe end is then urged into overall contact with portions of the mandrel and with the outer periphery of the ring. The heated pipe end is then cooled, resulting in encapsul- ating the ring within the annular pocket of the shaped bell. The mandrel is then disassociated from the shaped bell and from the hard ring. Finally, a resilient gasket is applied interiorly of the bell in contact with both portions of the annular pocket and the annular angular junction of the ring. The apparatus includes: (a) belling mandrel means having a medial portion and an outer diameter sufficient to impress a bell shape in one pre- heated end of the plastic pipe; (b) a hard configured ring insertable on the medial portion of the mandrel, the ring having an outer peripheral ramp to provide a shaped profile of a diameter that is larger than the outer diameter of the belling Abstract of the Disclosure continued (page 2) mandrel means, and also defining an annular, radially-inwardly exposed angular junction in the ring to define configured, annular surfaces to secure a gasket therein; (c) means in the belling mandrel means releasably to retain the hard configured ring in association with the belling mandrel means; (d) means for urging the preheated pipe end into overall contact with portions of the mandrel and with the outer periphery of the ring; (e) means for cooling the preheated pipe end and thereby encapsulating the ring within the annular pocket of the shaped bell; and (f) means for disassociating the mandrel from the shaped bell and from the hard ring.
