A method and apparatus for selecting an entry stored in a data processing system, and specifically a destination in a vehicle navigation system. The system includes a display, scrolling means having first and second controls, and selecting means. Using the scrolling means, the user of the system scrolls through a plurality of stored destinations on the display. Each destination is made up of a plurality of alphanumeric symbols, the destinations forming an alphabetically and numerically organized list. The scrolling is accomplished by using the first control of the scrolling means. A character position selector is used to select a character position in a first indicated destination and the second control of the scrolling means is used to jump to subsets of destinations with the next or previous alphanumeric symbol in the character position as compared to a currently indicated destination. The selecting means are then used to enter a desired destination.
L'invention est constituée par une méthode et un appareil servant à sélectionner des entrées stockées dans un système de traitement des données, particulièrement une destination dans un système de navigation de véhicule. Le système comprend un afficheur, un dispositif de défilement doté d'une première et d'une seconde commande, et un dispositif de sélection. € l'aide du dispositif de défilement, l'utilisateur du système peut faire défiler sur l'afficheur une pluralité de destinations stockées. Chaque destination est constituée d'une pluralité de symboles alphanumériques, les destinations formant une liste organisée alphabétiquement et numériquement. Le défilement est effectué au moyen de la première commande du dispositif de défilement. Un sélecteur de positions de caractère est utilisé pour sélectionner une position de caractère dans une première destination indiquée et la seconde commande du dispositif de défilement sert à passer à des sous-ensembles de destinations ayant le symbole alphanumérique suivant ou précédent dans la position de caractère par rapport à la destination indiquée du moment. Le dispositif de sélection est alors utilisé pour introduire la destination désirée.
