The present invention discloses a system (100) and method for adaptive selection of scanning modes based on the content of the input image sequence. In one embodiment, two encoders (110, 120) are employed. A first encoder (110) receives the input image sequence and encodes each frame of the image sequence using at least two different scanning modes, e.g., zigzag scanning mode or alternative scanning mode in accordance with the MPEG-2 standard or the like. Specifically, different portions of each frame will be scanned using different scanning modes. This first encoding provides look-ahead information so that a second encoder is able to assign DCT quantized coefficients in a more efficient scanning order, thereby reducing encoding bits and/or improving the picture quality.
La présente invention concerne un système (100) et un procédé permettant de sélectionner de manière adaptative des modes de balayage en fonction de la séquence d'entrée des images. Dans un mode de réalisation, on utilise deux codeurs (110, 120). Un premier codeur (110) reçoit la séquence d'entrée d'images et code chacune des trains de la séquence d'images à l'aide d'au moins deux modes de balayage différents, soit un mode de balayage en zigzag et un mode de balayage alternatif selon la norme MPEG-2 ou analogue. Plus spécifiquement, des parties différentes de chaque train sont balayées selon des modes de balayage différents. Le premier codage fournit des informations d'anticipation permettant à un second codeur d'attribuer des codes quantifiés DCT dans un ordre de balayage plus efficace, ce qui réduit les bits de codage et/ou améliore la qualité de l'image.
