The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for controlling the analog voltage level, and thereby the analog power level, of analog signals propagating on a data transmission medium. The apparatus comprises a voltage divider including two branches, one of the branches being provided with a bipolar transistor acting as a switch. When the transistor is in a closed condition it conducts and the voltage divider attenuates the input signal. When the bipolar transistor is in the opened condition it does not conduct and the input signal is not attenuated. To prevent the input signal from acquiring a negative polarity (that should be avoided since the bipolar transistor conducts in a single direction), the input signal is combined with a DC component of a magnitude sufficient to avoid any polarity changes. A digital control signal input at the base terminal of the transistor determines its state of conduction and thus controls the level of attenuation manifested by the apparatus.
