ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A printing element comprises a daisy-like array wherein the character elements are supported at the ends of a plurality of radially extending beams so as to form a substantially circular array. The rotary position of the array is directly and optically sensed by a plurality of light sources which direct lighttoward the beams and through the spaces therebetween to a plurality of light detectors. Various characters of the printing element which forms the rotor of a stepper motor are stopped at the print postition in response to feedback provided by the light detector.
