ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method and apparatus for separating discrete solid fractions by dispersion in a dense liquid medium wherein the suspended materials are subjected to settling to produce a low density fraction floating on the surface, a middlings fraction suspended in the liquid medium, and a high density fraction which sinks to the bottom. The low density fraction is conveyed by the moving medium and discharges over an overflow weir, while high density fraction is lifted out in a region of the dense medium in which the surface level of the dense medium is substantially free from particles of the floating low density fraction. The separated fractions are delivered to screen separators for separation from the liquid medium.
