Ice booms are deployed in rivers and lakes to control the ice movement in winter. These booms are often removed during the summer and re-deployed in the fall just before the ice season arrives. In order to decrease the deployment and recovery costs, a method was developed that allows keeping the boom in place by sinking each pontoon under water. These pontoons are then re-floated in time for the next ice season. Each pontoon is pressurised with air to about 20 psi, then, is filled with water until its weight exceeds its buoyancy without allowing the inside air to escape. The pontoon sinks and rests on the bottom until the fall. Each pontoon is then re-floated by opening the valve and allowing the water to escape under air pressure inside the pontoon and until the buoyancy of the pontoon exceeds its weight. The procedure has been verified following a 1/3-scale model test carried out under laboratory conditions. This procedure allows the use of a range of pressures using air and water pumps and a pressure control valve to accommodate varying pontoon diameters and ice boom sizes.
