METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR SOFT REJECTION OF A CLUTCHED LOAD ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A system for coupling a large load to at least one electric motor through a respective friction clutch and for uncoupling the load from the motors in a manner which reduces the disturbance on the supply line which provides power to the motors. The system has a control which is responsive to a start signal to operate each clutch from its disengaged condition to its fully engaged condition at a predetermined rate selected to avoid overheating of the clutches while providing a minimum disturbance to the supply line. The time interval for operating the clutch from its disengaged condition to its engaged condition is a first time interval. The control is also responsive to a stop signal to operate each clutch from its fully engaged condition towards its disengaged condition at a predetermined rate, slower than an abrupt rate, for a second time interval, and at the end of the second time interval at an abrupt rate. The time interval for the abrupt rate of change following the second time interval is a third time interval. The sum of the second and third time intervals is less than the first time interval.
