Abstract A method of and apparatus for increasing the overall efficiency of fluidized catalytic cracking (FCC) is disclosed. Separated or spent cracking cata- lyst after reaction with hydrocarbonaceous material is maintained at elevated temperatures for an extended period of time so as to form additional gaseous and liquid hydrocarbon products before the catalyst is returned to a regenerator for removal of residual hydrocarbon, called "coke" by combustion in a stream of air or oxygen-enriched air. In a preferred form the spent catalyst is held at such elevated tempera- ture for from 1 to 30 minutes. This rate is from 6 to 1800 times the reaction time of The catalyst and hy- drocarbonaceous mixture in an FCC reactor riser pipe. Such prolonged stripping action produces one or more of following benefits in FCC operations: (1) yields greater hydrocarbon liquid and gas for the same process flow conditions (e.g. feed stock, flow rates, temperatures and pressures) (2) permits feeding heav- ier (higher boiling range) hydrocarbons due to excess oxygen capacity in the regenerator by the changed nature of the coke (coke with less hydrogen content consumes less oxygen) (3) permits feeding hydrocar- bons at a greater rate due to excess oxygen capacity developed in the regenerator by the changed nature of the coke on the spent catalyst (4) reduces the quan- tity of additional catalyst required to maintain con- stant high catalytic activity when heat balance is maintained (i.e. to maintain constant reactor tempera ture by increasing catalyst circulation rates which cools the regenerator and thereby slows the rate of catalyst deactivation and thereby reduces the need for fresh make-up catalyst) (5) reduces steam required in the catalyst stripper to deliver the same amount of coke as fuel to the regenerator (gases evolved in the bottom of the stripper act to replace steam as a stripping medium) (6) reduces oxygen required for regeneration due to the altered nature of the coke (7) reduces foul water from recovery of stripping steam condensate from the hydrocarbon product stream due to lowered stripping steam rates. In a preferred form of apparatus, the strip- per column is either adequately insulated, or the stripper column is in heat exchange with the riser pipe, or both, or the column is enclosed within the regenerator so that combustion gases of burning coke and/or the hot bed of regenerating catalyst heats the column and the spent catalyst during their extended residence in the column.
