A method and apparatus for supporting power tongs includes a rigid guide member having a first end and a second end. The guide member is secured in a laterally extending orientation from a well head. A movable carriage is mounted on the guide member. The carriage is movable in a first direction toward the first end of the guide member and toward the wellhead and in a second direction toward the second end of the guide member and away from the well head. A power tong mounting is positioned on the movable carriage, whereby power tongs are mounted onto the movable carriage.
