A method and apparatus for valve control to suppress "water hammer" are described. A valve closure control mechanism controls the action of a valve actuator to ensure that the valve is gradually closed. The gradual closing of the valve permits the water pressure to equilibrate in the water conduit upstream of the valve without imparting momentum energy to the valve, the conduit or the supporting structures of the conduit system.
