ABSTRACT There is provided a method of taking a sample of gas exhaled by a subject and passing the sample through a duct from an inlet to an outlet thereof. The duct is initially closed. The pressure of exhaled gas in the inlet of the duct as created by the subject is monitored, and, provided that that pressure is maintained above a predetermined threshold pressure for a predetermined period, the duct is opened at the end of that period to allow the exhaled gas to flow through the duct. An apparatus for implementing the method is also provided, which is suitable for sampling alcohol-containing exhaled gas, which can then have its alcohol content analyzed.
