The invention discloses a method and apparatus for temporary fluid stoppage in a pipe carrying a flow of fluid under relatively low pressure. A slot is cut transverse to the axis of the pipe, the slot extending down to the widest inner dimension of the pipe. A block plate having a thickness slightly less than the width of the slot is inserted snugly into the slot. The leading edge thereof is shaped to conform to the inside of the pipe, for example as a semi-circle for a cylindrical pipe, and the block plate blocks the flow of fluid through the pipe. When it is desired to restart the flow of fluid, the block plate is removed and the slot is sealed.
