The present application relates in general to an apparatus (1) and to methods for testing the performance of an automotive catalytic converter (170) under conditions simulating those which occur in motor vehicles over extended driving conditions. The applications provides a novel swirl plate (18) for creating a flow pattern involving the interaction of a number of swirl jets (242). The interaction of the swirl jets (242) creates a swirl flow that collapses and expands, preferably at intervals that are substantially equivalent in length to the inner diameter of a combustion tube (210). The swirl plate (18) and a fuel injector (16) enable the burner to run stoichiometric for extended periods of time.

L'invention concerne, de façon générale, un dispositif et des procédés servant à contrôler les capacités d'un convertisseur catalytique automobile (170) dans des conditions analogues à celles de véhicules à moteur en conduite de longue durée. Ce dispositif comporte une plaque à tourbillon (18) servant à créer une configuration de débit impliquant l'interaction de plusieurs jets tourbillonnaires (242). L'interaction de ces jets tourbillonnaires (242) crée une turbulence soumise à un affaissement et à une dilatation, de préférence, à des intervalles dont la longueur est sensiblement équivalente à celle du diamètre intérieur d'un tube de combustion (210). La plaque à tourbillon (18) et un injecteur de carburant (7) permettent au brûleur de fonctionner en mode stoechiométrique pendant des durées prolongées.
