A method of testing golf putting skills is described. Firstly, set out a test putting surface having at least one target representing a golf hole. The at least one target includes a central zone with at least one concentric zone surrounding the central zone. Numeric scoring values are assigned to the central zone and the concentric zones. The scoring values descend as the concentric zones get farther from the central zone. Secondly, establish at least one shooting position a selected distance from the at least one target. Thirdly, test a statistically valid sample of golfers of differing abilities. Each golfer is tested in a consistent manner with at least 10 putts from the at least one shooting position. Data is compiled on the gross score obtained by golfers of differing abilities by adding the numeric scoring values attained by each golfer for each of the at least 10 putts. Fourthly, test an individual golfer in a manner consistent with the manner in which the statistically valid sample of golfers was tested with at least 10 putts from the at least one shooting position. Fifthly, compare the gross score attained by the individual golfer as against the statistically valid sample of golfers to achieve a ranking, termed a putting handicap. An apparatus best suited for use with the described method is also described.
