An integrated method and apparatus to continuously produce purified Single Wall Carbon Nanotubes (SWNT) from a continuous supply of solid carbon powder fed to an induction plasma torch. The apparatus includes a reactor body disposed to maintain laminar flow of gases with the torch body and coupled to a quenching body where temperature and residence time is controlled. Conveniently, functionalization may take place in the quenching body. The torch is operated with an argon carrier gas, an argon stabilizing gas and a helium sheath gas. Solid carbon reactants are preferably mixed with at least two metal catalysts containing nickel and cobalt with additional metal oxides of yttrium and cerium being desirable.
L~invention concerne un procédé et un appareil destinés à produire en continu des nanotubes de carbone monoparoi (SWNT) purifiés à partir d'un approvisionnement continu en poudre de carbone solide qui alimente un chalumeau à plasma par induction. L'appareil comprend un corps de réacteur disposé de façon à maintenir un écoulement laminaire de gaz avec le corps du chalumeau et couplé à un corps de refroidissement où la température et le temps de séjour sont régulés. De manière pratique, la fonctionnalisation peut avoir lieu dans le corps de refroidissement. Le chalumeau fonctionne avec de l~argon en tant que gaz de véhicule, de l~argon en tant que gaz de stabilisation et de l~hélium en tant que gaz d~isolation. Des réactifs de carbone solides sont de préférence mélangés avec au moins deux catalyseurs métalliques contenant du nickel et du cobalt, des oxydes de métaux d~yttrium et de cérium supplémentaires étant souhaitables.
