ABSTRACT OF THE INVENTION There is provided a new and useful method for the controlled reduction of organic material comprising subjecting the material to microwave radiation in a reducing atmosphere. An apparatus for carrying out the method comprises an airtight microwave chamber, means for feeding the organic material into the chamber, at least one microwave generator in the chamber, means for removing gaseous products from the chamber and means for removing solid residue from the chamber.
