Non-ferrous metal matte is converted in a method of the type in which air or oxygen-enriched air is injected through the injectors at a pressure at which the gas is underexpanded so that jets are formed which penetrate the bath to collapse remotely from the converter wall. The arrangement of the injectors is such that the collapsed jets form a curtain of rising bubbles defining within the bath (a) frontiers of elongated oxygen utilization zones in which agitation and utilization of converting gas is substantially at a maximum, (b) a mouth zone in which the agitation is limited and the oxygen utili- zation is below a maximum at which slopping at the mouth during blowing is substantially at a mimimum, and (c) isolating zones between the oxygen utiliza- tion zones and the wall of the converter, separating the oxygen utilization zones from the refractory whereby erosion thereof by rising gas bubbles is maintained substantially at a minimum.
