A method and apparatus (10) are provided for deacidifying cellulose based materials (60), especially books, magazines, and other bound or folded cellulose materials having a spine (62). The method includes contacting the materials with a treating medium and producing relative movement at a predetermined velocity between the materials (60) and the treating medium in a direction generally parallel to the spine (62) of the materials (60) and, preferably simultaneously, directing the treating medium by means of a spray toward the materials (60) in a direction generally perpendicular to the spine (62) of the material (60) for a period of time effective for the treating medium to contact substantially all of the material (60). Following treatment, any excess treating medium is removed from the material (60) and directing any such removed treating medium to a holding tank (72) for reuse later. The movement in a parallel direction is achieved by reciprocating the materials (60) through a tank (12) filled with treating medium. In addition, the materials (60) may be rotated about a central axis of the treatment tank (12). The preferred embodiment of the present invention includes an apparatus (10) consisting of a treating tank (12) for containing the treating medium, a plurality of material holders (40) disposed in the tank on a reciprocatable and rotatable shaft (30), and spray nozzles (50) for producing the perpendicular movement of the treating medium relative to the spine (62) of the material (60).
La présente invention concerne un procédé et un appareil (10) permettant la désacidification d'ouvrages à base de cellulose (60), en particulier des livres, magazines et autres matériels à base de cellulose, reliés ou pliés et dotés d'un dos (62). Le procédé consiste à mettre en contact les ouvrages avec un produit de traitement et à produire un mouvement relatif à une vitesse prédéterminée entre les ouvrages (60) et le produit de traitement, dans une direction en général parallèle au dos (62) des ouvrages (60) et, de préférence simultanément, à diriger le produit de traitement au moyen d'un jet vers les ouvrages (60), dans une direction en général perpendiculaire au dos (62) de l'ouvrage (60), pendant une période de temps suffisante pour que le produit de traitement soit en contact avec pratiquement l'ensemble de l'ouvrage (60). Après traitement, tout excédent de produit de traitement est retiré de l'ouvrage (60), pour être placé dans un réservoir (72) en vue d'une utilisation ultérieure. Pour obtenir un mouvement en direction parallèle, les ouvrages (60) sont déplacés en va-et-vient à travers un réservoir (12) rempli du produit du traitement. En outre, les ouvrages (60) peuvent tourner autour d'un axe central dans le réservoir de traitement (12). La forme d'exécution préférée faisant l'objet de la présente invention consiste en un appareil (10) composé d'un réservoir de traitement (12) contenant le produit de traitement, d'une pluralité de porte-ouvrages (40) disposés dans le réservoir sur un arbre (30) à mouvement rotatif et de va-et-vient (30) et de pulvérisateurs (50) qui assurent le mouvement perpendiculaire du produit de traitement par rapport au dos (62) de l'ouvrage (60).
