In one aspect of the invention, there is provided a method and apparatus for early detection of subacute, potentially catastrophic infectious illness in a premature newborn infant. The method comprises: (a) continuously monitoring heart rate variability in the premature newborn infant and (b) identifying at least one characteristic abnormality in the heart rate variability that is associated with the illness. This method can be used to diagnose illnesses such as, but not limited to, sepsis, necrotizing enterocolitis, pneumonia and meningitis. In another aspect of the present invention, there is provided a method and apparatus for early detection of subacute, potentially catastrophic infectious illness in a patient. The method comprises: (a) continuously monitoring the patient's RR intervals; (b) generating a normalized data set of the RR intervals; (c) calculating one or more of (i) moments of the data set selected from the third and higher moments and (ii) percentile values of the data set; and (d) identifying an abnormal heart rate variability associated with the illness based on one or more of the moments and the percentile values.
Dans un aspect l'invention a trait à une méthode et un appareil de détection précoce de maladies infectieuses subaiguës potentiellement catastrophiques chez un nouveau-né prématuré. La méthode consiste: (a) à contrôler en continu la variabilité de la fréquence cardiaque du nouveau-né prématuré, et (b) à identifier au moins une anomalie caractéristique de la variabilité de la fréquence cardiaque associée à la maladie. Cette méthode peut être utilisée pour diagnostiquer des maladies telles que, de façon non exhaustive, la septicémie, l'entérocolite ulcéronécrosante, la pneumonie et la méningite. Un autre aspect de la présente invention est une méthode et un appareil de détection précoce de maladies infectieuses subaiguës potentiellement catastrophiques chez un patient. La méthode consiste: (a) à contrôler en continu les intervalles de fréquence respiratoire du patient, (b) à produire un ensemble de données normalisées des intervalles de fréquence respiratoire, (c) à calculer un ou plusieurs (i) des moments de l'ensemble de données choisis entre le troisième moment et les moments supérieurs et (ii) des valeurs percentiles de l'ensemble de données, et (d) à identifier une variabilité de fréquence cardiaque anormale associée à la maladie sur la base d'un ou de plusieurs des moments et des valeurs percentiles.
