Apparatus (20, 20b) for coating a traveling paper web (w) includes a coater head (22, 22b) for applying a film of an aqueous slurry of coating material either directly to the paper web, which is supported on the surface of a rotating backing roll (14, 14b), or to the surface of a backing roll (14, 14c') which in turn applies the film to the paper web (w) which is nipped between two backing rolls. The water head (22, 22b-d) includes an inlet (24, 24b) for receiving fresh coating material which is introduced into a mixing chamber (26, 26b). A looped flow path is established within the water head which includes a feed channel (28, 28b) extending from the mixing chamber (26, 26b) and leading into a coating chamber (18, 18b) where one portion of the coating material proceeds in the direction of the rotating backing roll while another portion of the coating material exits the feed channel in the opposite direction over a baffle (30, 30b). The aqueous slurry of coating material near the downstream end of the coating chamber enters a recirculation channel from which it is directed through a plurality of flow metering orifices (58, 58b) back into the mixing chamber (26, 26b). This looped flow pattern operates to greatly reduce both the entrainment of air in the coating material in the application chamber and the quantity fresh coating material needed properly to coat the paper web, particularly at relatively high speeds desired. The application chamber can either include or not include a flexible blade (36, 36b). A rotating metering bar (40, 40b) is mounted on the coater head downstream of the coating chamber to meter the coating material applied to either the paper web or the backing roll.
L'invention concerne un dispositif (20, 20b) pour appliquer une sauce de couchage sur une bande de papier en mouvement (w), ledit dispositif comprenant une tête de coucheuse (22, 22b) servant à appliquer un film d'une suspension aqueuse d'un matériau de couchage, soit directement sur la bande de papier placée sur la surface d'un contre-rouleau rotatif (14, 14b), soit sur la surface d'un contre-rouleau (14, 14c') qui à son tour applique le film sur la bande de papier (w) pincée entre les deux contre-rouleaux. La tête de coucheuse (22, 22b-d) comprend un orifice d'entrée (24, 24b) servant à recevoir le matériau de couchage frais qui est introduit dans une chambre de mélange (26, 26b). Un trajet d'écoulement en boucle est établi à l'intérieur de la tête de coucheuse (26, 26b), ledit trajet comprenant un canal d'alimentation (28, 28b) qui s'étend entre la chambre de mélange (26, 26b) et une chambre de couchage (18, 18b) où une partie du matériau de couchage s'écoule dans la direction du contre-rouleau rotatif tandis qu'une autre partie du matériau de couchage sort du canal d'alimentation dans la direction opposée par l'intermédiaire d'une chicane (30, 30b). La suspension aqueuse de matériau de couchage, à proximité de l'extrémité en aval de la chambre de couchage, pénètre dans un canal de recirculation à partir duquel elle est dirigée à travers une pluralité d'orifices de dosage d'écoulement (58, 58b) pour être réintroduite dans la chambre de mélange (26, 26b). Le trajet d'écoulement en boucle permet de réduire de façon importante l'entraînement d'air dans le matériau de couchage dans la chambre d'application et la quantité de matériau de couchage frais nécessaire au couchage de la bande de papier, en particulier aux vitesses relativement élevées, souhaitées. La chambre d'application peut comprendre ou non une lame flexible (36, 36b). Une barre de dosage rotative (40, 40b) est montée sur la tête de coucheuse (36, 36b) en aval de la chambre de couchage pour doser le matériau de couchage appliqué soit sur la bande de papier soit sur le contre-rouleau.
