ABSTRACT The invention relates to a method and apparatus for the automatic visual inspection, of at least partly specularly reflective surfaces, such as metal surfaces, especially those in continuous motion by means of a receiver and image-analysis equipment. The apparatus includes a light source consisting of an incandescent bulb having a lens positioned in front of it and a camera with an image analysis device. The light from the light source is adapted to be reflected from the object being inspsected to produce an image which is received by the camera and analyzed by the image analysis device. In order to eliminate the uneven illumination caused by variation in the height and orienta- tion of the surface being inspected the view angle of the camera can be regulated by adjusting the length of the incandescent bulb or by adjusting the aperture in front of the light source.
