ABSTRACT In a method and apparatus for the high speed grinding of gearwheels from a peripherally unprepared, cylindrical blank, rough grinding of a tooth profile is performed simultaneously with finish grinding of a neighbouring tooth profile. During rough grinding a substantial volume is removed from the periphery of the blank, so that finish grinding of this rough ground tooth profile, after indexing of the blank by one tooth pitch, takes place at a relatively low rate of material removal and without great pressure. Rough-and finish-grinding are carried out with a single appropriately pro- filed grinding wheel during intermittent indexing of the blank. The grinding wheel performs a working stroke parallel to the central axis of the blank and grinds to finished size the right and left flanks of neigh- bouring teeth as well as the root between these flanks, while at the same time the flank profile of the succeeding tooth the direction of indexing is rough ground, whereby after rotation through 360° the tooth profile part serving as starting point or datum point is finish ground. The rough grinding removes about 90% of the flank material to be ground away.
