A B S T R A C T There is disclosed a method of forming articles from a web of a suitable sheet thermoplastic material in which the web is fed in the hot plastic state to a surface cooler which cools the surfaces sufficiently to make the web self-supporting in its longitudinal direction while the plastic material between the surfaces remains in the plastic state, and the surface- cooled web is fed vertically to a forming tool which operates in a horizontal direction to form the articles from the web. Apparatus for carrying out the method comprises an extruder of the web, a surface cooler arranged to cool the surfaces of the web of material received from the extruder, a station includ- ing a forming tool arranged for horizontal movement to form articles from the web, and a feed for feeding the web from the surface cooler to the stat- ion in a vertical direction.
