RBP File No. 4930-002 ABSTRACT A method is provided for conducting an opinion survey in which a question is posed to a person being surveyed and a timing means is started at the end of the question. The timing means is stopped upon commencement of the person's response and the person's response is recorded. The method further includes the step of evaluating the validity of the starting and stopping of the timing means and may further include the step of evaluating and recording the quality of the audio response which stopped the timing means to monitor the validity of the measured response time. An apparatus is also provided for use in survey research. The apparatus has a means for displaying a menu of questions to be asked to the person conducting the survey. The apparatus also includes a means for electronically or manually starting a timing apparatus upon completion of the question and a means for converting the first audio response from a person being surveyed into an electronic signal which stops the timing means to record the time taken to respond.
