A therapeutic oxygen-nitric oxide gas mixture is produced by passing air, oxygen-enriched air or air containing a small amount of ammonia over a noble metal catalyst at an elevated temperature. The product gas containing nitric oxide and a small amount of nitrogen dioxide is passed through a bed of an adsorbent which preferentially adsorbs nitrogen dioxide to produce nitric oxide-containing air suitable for administering to humans as an inhalant.

Mélange thérapeutique gazeux d'oxygène et d'oxyde nitrique produit par le passage d'air, d'air enrichi d'oxygène ou d'air contenant une petite quantité d'ammoniac sur un catalyseur à base de métal noble, à une température élevée. Le gaz produit contenant de l'oxyde nitrique et une petite quantité de dioxyde d'azote passe ensuite sur un lit de matière adsorbante qui, par adsorbtion préférentielle, retient le dioxyde d'azote et donne de l'air contenant de l'oxyde nitrique de qualité appropriée pour administration par inhalation à des humains.
