The present invention relates to a method for the production of polarization holograms wherein, in a first step, a phase holgram is calculated (1) and wherein, in a second step, the calculated hologram is transferred to a material carrier (5) comprising a substance in which oriented birefringence can be produced locally by light exposure. The invention further relates to an apparatus for the production of polarization holograms and the use of the polarization holograms according to the invention as data stores, security features or diffractive optical elements for performing conventional optical functions .
