ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Rubber is recovered for re-use e.g. from scrap pneumatic tyres by briefly raising a surface of the tyre to a high temperature and then rasping the heat-treated surface. Tyres reinforced either with a textile or a steel ply can first be parted on opposite sides of the breaker structure. A machine is provided which accepts pieces of vulcanised material and progressively reduces them to heat-treated particles by repetitvely heating a surface of each piece and attacking it with a rasping tool.
