ABSTRACT "A METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR THE TRANSMISSION OF DIGITAL LUMINANCE- AND CHROMINANCE TELEVISION SIGNALS" Digital television signals are transmitting using PCM codewords and DPCM codewords which have been obtained by conversion from the DPCM codewords. The DPCM codewords each represent the difference between the current scan value represented by the associated PCM codeword and the neighbouring scan values which are represented by adjacent PCM codewords. If the amplitude value of the PCM codeword is B and if the amplitude values of the adjacent PCM codewords are A and C, invert- ing registers 2 and 3 invert the amplitude value B in relation to the other amplitude values. Adders 4 and 5 then form the difference codewords representing the amplitude values A-B and C-B which are coded in the DPCM coders 8 and 9. At the correct time a parallel- series register 10 converts the PCM codeword and the newly formed DPCM codewords into a t.d.m. signal. Corresponding reconversion is carried out in receiving apparatus. (Fig. 1)
