A method and apparatus for therapeutic electromagnetic treatment utilizes a spaitially extended pulse light source such as a flashlamp or flash tube with means for efficiently focussing light from the flashlamp into optical fibers for therapeutic treatment. In a first embodiment a flashlamp in a housing provided a pulsed light output for treatment. The housing has an opening and is suitable for being disposed adjacent a skin treatment area. The housing may include internal reflectors and optical filters as well as an iris mounted proximate the opening. The lamp is powered by a variable pulse width pulse forming circuit. Other embodiments with different features are also disclosed.
