In a tooth cleaning system having a flexible protective shield, and a nozzle having an end portion extending into the shield. The shield is connected to a source of vacuum and has an inner wall having an inner wall perimeter. The nozzle is connected to a fluid source. The fluid from the fluid source travels directly from the nozzle to less than half of the area enclosed by the perimeter. The improvement includes pivotally supporting the nozzle whereby the nozzle is readily repositioned to positions angularly offset from the central axis of the shield directing fluid from the nozzle to the entire tooth surface and enclosed by the perimeter. The perimeter forms a fluid tight seal with the tooth outer surface. The invention provides a method of cleaning teeth including providing a flexible plastic shield having a nozzle channel therethrough and a rigid nozzle extending through said nozzle channel. The flexible protective shield is positioned against a tooth surface and the pressure within the chamber formed by the flexible protective shield and the tooth surface is reduced to a pressure below atmospheric pressure. Cleaning the entire tooth surface area by bending the nozzle channel and maintaining a fluid tight seal at the perimeter of the protective shield.

L'invention porte sur un système de nettoyage des dents comportant un manchon souple de protection et une buse dont l'extrémité saille dans le manchon. Ledit manchon est relié à une source de dépression et présente une paroi intérieure présentant un périmètre intérieur. La buse est reliée à une source de fluide dont le fluide passe directement de la buse jusqu'à moins d'une moitié de la surface englobée par le périmètre. L'amélioration porte sur le montage pivotant de la buse qui peut facilement se replacer dans des positions décalées angulairement par rapport à l'axe central du manchon et diriger le fluide sortant de la buse sur la totalité de la surface des dents comprise dans le périmètre qui constitue un joint étanche avec la surface extérieure des dents. L'invention porte également sur un procédé de nettoyage des dents à l'aide d'un manchon de protection plastique souple traversé par un canal recevant une buse qui s'étend à travers ledit canal. Le manchon de protection souple s'applique contre la surface des dents, tandis que la pression régnant dans la chambre délimitée par le manchon et la surface des dents est abaissée au-dessous du niveau de la pression atmosphérique. Le nettoyage de la totalité de la surface des dents se fait en courbant le conduit de la buse et en maintenant un joint étanche aux fluides au niveau du périmètre du manchon de protection.
