METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR TOWING ICEBERGS ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method and apparatus for towing icebergs. A hole is augered in the side of an iceberg at a tow point, a expanding base or other type of anchor is inserted into the hole and the iceberg is towed by pulling on a hawser attached to the end of the anchor. In a preferred embodiment the sea water which entered the hole around the auger is flushed out with fresh water and the fresh water is frozen around the auger or other anchor. This freezing action creates a bond between the anchor and the iceberg whereby the anchoring point is able to sustain a shearing force equal to the surface area of the refrozen water in contact with the sides of the holes times the shear strength of the bond.
